Best flowers I've seen in a long time, and even a little sandy beach. Lost the trail once due to an evil larch hanging over the entry through a copse of spruce. FROM RADIUM: at the Hwy 93/95 junction, drive west past the sawmill along Horsethief FSR. Waterfalls as you get closer to the lake are great. We were committed to making this happen! Not able to continue. Set your odometer to zero at the traffic lights on Highway 93/95 at the Invermere junction. Tons of rivers, waterfalls and trees! 1000% worth the climb ! A steady climb takes you over avalanche slopes and a couple of two-log bridges. Almost al of trail is shaded. I had an absolute blast. The trail to the lake is only five miles (ONE WAY) and is in reasonable shape. Think of this as a heatmap, more rides = more kinetic energy = warmer colors. From Radium, we worked our way on backroads to the Horsethief Creek Road, a good backroad that goes 50 km west into the Purcell Range. Continue straight at the 9 km mark, right at Green Barn, Gopher Creek, MacDonald Creek and Farnham Creek Roads, crossing Horsethief Creek at the 42 km mark. The trail itself starts off with a short climb but it levels out for a while as you follow the river. Typically, it's a later in the season hike, as the bridge over Hell Roaring Creek is not installed until the start of the summer hiking season (late June/early July) after the danger of any washouts has passed. We stopped numerous times and didn’t encounter another car at any point on the drive. A few downed trees across the trail but nothing major. It took us about 5.5 hours round trip, not including the lunch break by the Lake. Hard hike 7.5 hr for us but we are fairly slow due to bad knees. The intended direction a trail should be ridden. One of the routes we wanted to do was the well-established trail to Lake of the Hanging Glacier. Loved it! The real reward is just over the ridge. The Lake of the Hanging Glacier is not in a national park, but the lake's scenery rivals the best of the nearby parks. You could easily ride a bike the first several km if you can your bike around the inital detour. We would have loved to sit and eat our lunch there but unfortunately we just spent most of the time trying to swat them away. This road has had some issues in the past but as of 2011 it was in fine shape all the way to the Jumbo Pass trailhead. Was hard but so worth it. On the Western slopes of the Purcell Mountains, directly opposite from Lake of the Hanging Glacier is a cluster of great day hikes accessed of Glacier Creek Road. ...
